It may still feel very much like summer here in Texas, but fall family photo season is right around the corner! Every year, September through November becomes one of my busiest seasons, and for good reason. The evenings start cooling down, the light gets a little softer, Christmas cards are on everyone’s mind, and it’s the perfect excuse to finally update those family photos.
If you’re thinking about booking fall family photos in McKinney, TX, now is the time to start planning. Fall dates—especially weekends—tend to fill long before it actually feels like fall outside.
Whether you’re looking for a quick mini session, updated photos of the kids, something beautiful for your Christmas cards, or a full family session with plenty of time to slow down and capture everyone, I’ve put together everything you need to know before booking your fall photos this year.
When Is the Best Time for Fall Family Photos in McKinney, TX?
This is one of the questions I get asked every year, and the answer really depends on the look you’re hoping for.
September in North Texas can still look and feel a lot like summer, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t beautiful for photos. We still have golden grasses, green trees, later sunsets, and gorgeous evening light.
By October, our outdoor locations typically begin taking on more of those warm, neutral tones that people associate with fall. The evenings also begin cooling down, which can make outdoor family sessions a little more comfortable.
November is usually when we have the best chance of seeing more traditional fall color around McKinney and North Texas. Of course, Texas weather is never completely predictable, so I don’t recommend choosing a date based solely on hoping for colorful leaves.
Beautiful fall photos have much more to do with the location, light, styling, and your family than whether every tree has turned orange.
For most families, late September through mid-November is a wonderful time for fall family photography in McKinney and the surrounding North Texas area.
If you’re hoping to use your images for Christmas cards or gifts, I recommend booking toward the earlier side of that window so you have plenty of time after your gallery is delivered.
What Time of Day Is Best for Family Photos?
You’ll hear photographers talk about golden hour all the time, and there’s a reason we love it. The hour before sunset gives us beautiful, soft light that works wonderfully for outdoor family photography.
But the prettiest light isn’t always the best time for every family.
If you have young children, an evening session may fall right around dinner or bedtime. Sometimes asking a tired two-year-old to happily take family photos at 6:30 in the evening simply isn’t the best recipe for success.
That’s one reason I’ve added morning mini sessions to my fall lineup this year. For families with little ones who are happiest earlier in the day, a morning session can be such a great alternative.
When we’re choosing your session time, I always recommend considering your children’s normal schedule. Beautiful light matters, but happy, rested kids matter even more.
What Should We Wear for Fall Family Photos?
This is probably the second most common question I get, and my biggest piece of advice is to coordinate rather than match.
Your family doesn’t need to wear identical colors, and you definitely don’t have to dress everyone in orange simply because it’s fall.
For timeless fall family photos, I love starting with softer neutrals and adding a few warm or earthy tones. Cream, camel, brown, olive, rust, muted blue, burgundy, denim, soft florals, and warm neutrals all photograph beautifully against our North Texas outdoor locations.
Texture is another easy way to make outfits feel interesting without looking too busy. Knits, linen, denim, corduroy, layered sweaters, and flowy dresses can all add dimension to your photos.
If one person is wearing a pattern—maybe Mom has a floral dress—use the colors within that pattern to help choose everyone else’s outfits. This creates a coordinated look without making everyone appear overly matched.
Most importantly, choose clothing that feels like your family. I want you to look back at these photographs and recognize yourselves.
Where Should We Take Fall Family Photos Around McKinney?
One of my favorite things about photographing families throughout McKinney and North Texas is the variety of locations available to us.
A beautiful fall session doesn’t necessarily require colorful leaves. Open fields, tall grasses, rustic barns, wooded areas, creeks, pine trees, and simple natural settings can all create completely different looks while still feeling warm and seasonal.
I also offer studio options for families who prefer something cleaner and more classic.
When choosing a location, I’m paying attention to much more than the backdrop. Light is incredibly important. I also consider where the sun will be at your session time, how much room we have for kids to move and play, how crowded a location tends to be, and what will photograph best during that particular time of year.
Sometimes a simple field with beautiful light creates far more beautiful photographs than an elaborate location.
Should We Book a Mini Session or a Full Family Session?
This really comes down to what you want from your photos and what works best for your family.
My fall mini sessions are approximately 15–20 minutes and are offered on specific dates at predetermined locations. They’re perfect for families who want a quick yearly update, Christmas card photos, a few new pictures of the kids, or simply don’t need the time and variety of a full session.
I’ve also introduced a new tiered mini-session system this year. Instead of every mini including the same number of images, you can choose the collection that works best for you.
After your session, you’ll receive a proof gallery where you’ll select the favorites included with your collection. If you end up loving more images than expected, you’ll have the option to purchase additional photographs or upgrade your gallery.

When a Full Family Session Is a Better Fit
A full family session gives us more time and flexibility.
If you have several young children who may need some time to warm up, want lots of different family combinations, or simply want a slower and more relaxed experience, I’d recommend choosing a full session.
Full sessions also allow us more time for individual portraits of the kids, siblings together, each parent with the children, Mom and Dad together, traditional family portraits, and plenty of natural moments in between.
My regular portrait sessions are all-inclusive, so you’ll receive a curated proof gallery and can select all of your favorite images to be professionally edited.
Neither option is necessarily better than the other. Minis are wonderful for some families, while others benefit from having a little more time. I’m always happy to help you decide which one makes the most sense for your family.
What If My Kids Don’t Cooperate?
This is something almost every parent worries about before family photos, so you’re definitely not alone.
Your children don’t need to be perfectly behaved for me to create beautiful photographs of your family.
We’ll take their lead, keep things moving, and change directions when something isn’t working. Sometimes that means taking a break from posed photos and letting everyone walk together. Sometimes it means playing with the kids for a minute before trying again.
My goal isn’t to photograph a perfectly behaved version of your family. I want to photograph the connection between the people you love, and that doesn’t require perfection.
So please don’t spend your entire session worrying about whether your kids are doing exactly what they’re “supposed” to do. Let me worry about the photographs. You just love on your people.

Weekend evenings are some of the most requested dates on my calendar throughout the fall, so they’re considered premium dates. Weekday sessions allow me to offer a lower price point while still giving you the same photography experience.
They’re especially great for families with younger children, homeschool families, couples, maternity photos, or anyone who has a little flexibility during the week.
