Tips to Finding the Best Wedding Photographer

Your dream wedding day is a whirlwind of love, laughter, and happy tears. And while the day itself may fly by, your photos will last forever. That’s why finding the best wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during the planning process. But how do you pick someone who can capture all those magical moments exactly how you envision? Here’s a simple but helpful guide to help you choose the best wedding photographer for your big day!

1. Find a Wedding Photographer Who Matches Your Style

Do you love bold, true-to-color images with a touch of drama? Or are you drawn to light, airy, and dreamy photos? Maybe you’re all about candid storytelling and authentic moments. Whatever your vibe, make sure the photographer’s portfolio matches your vision. Pro tip: Spend some time scrolling their Instagram or website to see if their work makes your heart do a happy dance.

2. Why Your Wedding Photographer’s Personality Matters

Stalk their personality(in a totally non-creepy way). Your wedding photographer is going to be by your side for most of the day—so you’ll want someone you actually enjoy being around! Check out their “About Me” page or social media posts to get a feel for their personality. Do they seem fun, friendly, and professional? If they make you laugh or feel at ease, that’s a good sign.

3. Ask About their Wedding Photography Experience

Your wedding day isn’t just any photoshoot. It’s packed with special moments, surprises, and maybe even a little chaos. Look for a photographer who’s handled it all before. Someone who knows how to wrangle family groups, adjust for tricky indoor lighting(hello off camera flash), and capture that split-second reaction when your partner sees you walking down the aisle. My top 2 questions I tell potential clients to ask when interviewing photographers is “Do you have back up equipment available if something were to fail on site?” and “Do you back up our images to an external hard drive before doing anything else?”….. Experience matters! Going with the cheapest photographer isn’t always the best choice!

4. What’s Included in a Wedding Photographer’s Packages?

Let’s talk details! What’s included in their pricing? Some photographers offer extras like engagement sessions, albums, or second shooters to catch every angle. It’s important to decide your budget and discuss this with your significant other or the party that will be paying. Make a list of what’s most important to you when booking a photographer, along with questions you’d like to ask. Make sure you understand what’s included and what’s not, so there are no surprises later. (Psst… If they offer digital galleries and print options, even better!)

5. Getting to Know Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Once you’ve narrowed it down, set up a consultation! Whether it’s a coffee date or a Zoom call, this is your chance to ask questions, share your vision, and see if you vibe. Trust your gut here—if it feels like a match, it probably is. I always schedule a 15 minute phone call or zoom date before sending any documents or invoices over to my potential bride and groom. Being able to chat, laugh and discuss important details can be a great ice breaker. In my experience, putting a voice/face to the name on your screen helps to set a sturdy foundation of trust and confidence. I am an open book and want you to feel completely sure about your decision. A fantastic photographer is the most important element of your day(a coordinator is a huge plus too)!

6. The Importance of Reviews When Choosing a Wedding Photographer

Want to know what it’s really like to work with someone? Check out their reviews! Past clients will spill the tea on their experience, and glowing testimonials are a solid indicator that you’re in good hands. Bonus points for reviews that mention your photographer’s calmness, creativity, or ability to make everyone feel comfortable.

7. Trust Your Instincts

At the end of the day, this is about finding someone who clicks with you—both creatively and personally. When you look at their work and imagine them capturing your wedding, does it feel like the perfect fit? If the answer is yes, don’t hesitate to lock them in before someone else does! These days there is a wedding Facebook group in every major city. It’s wise to join these, and search your potential photographers name for any posts made by others. If you feel like something is off- it probably is.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the best wedding photographer is like finding your wedding dress—when it’s the one, you just know. Take your time, do your research, and trust your instincts. With the right photographer by your side, you’ll have a gorgeous gallery of photos that bring back all the love and magic of your big day, every time you look at them.
