How to Prepare for Your Professional Headshot Session
here’s one question I get before almost every branding or headshot session:
“What should I wear?”
The good news? You don’t need a brand-new wardrobe to create professional, polished images. A little planning goes a long way, and my goal is always to help you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
Here are a few of my favorite tips to help you prepare for your session.
Choose Clothing That Feels Like You
The best headshots don’t look overly styled—they look like the best version of you.
Choose outfits that fit well, make you feel confident, and reflect your personality or profession. If you’re a realtor, attorney, or business professional, a blazer or structured top photographs beautifully. If you’re a creative entrepreneur, don’t be afraid to incorporate textures or layers that fit your brand.
I always recommend bringing 2–3 outfit options so we can create a variety of looks during your session.

Stick With Solid Colors
Solid colors almost always photograph better than busy prints.
Neutral tones like cream, navy, olive, black, charcoal, and soft earth tones keep the focus where it belongs—on your face.
Small patterns are usually fine, but I’d avoid large logos, neon colors, or bold graphics that can become distracting.
Don’t Wait Until the Morning Of
A few days before your session, try everything on.
Steam or iron your clothing, make sure it fits comfortably, and hang everything up so it’s ready to go.
If you’re planning a haircut or fresh color, I recommend scheduling it about a week before your session. That gives everything time to settle and still look fresh.

Keep Hair & Makeup Natural
Professional makeup is always a great option, but it isn’t required.
The goal is simply to look like yourself on your very best day.
If you normally wear makeup, wear what makes you feel confident. If you don’t, that’s perfectly okay too.
For everyone, I recommend bringing a little powder or blotting paper to reduce shine before we begin.
Trust the Process
This is the part people worry about the most.
“I have no idea how to pose.”
Good news—you don’t have to.
I’ll guide you through everything, from where to place your hands to subtle changes in posture and expression. Most of my clients tell me they were nervous before their session and surprised by how relaxed and fun it ended up being.
You don’t need modeling experience. You just need to show up.

Your Headshot Should Feel Like You
Whether you’re updating your LinkedIn profile, launching a new business, refreshing your website, or simply investing in yourself, your headshot should feel approachable, professional, and authentic.
The best compliment I can receive is when someone says,
“That looks exactly like me.”
Because that’s always the goal.
